Movies have been the inspiration for custom bike themes since the first steam powered bicycle had a picture of Steamboat Willie painted on it. In fact, the Predator movie has been the inspiration for many themed bikes by dozens of builders, but never quite like this. When Roderick "Slick Rick" McCullough, a successful business owner from Georgia, decided he wanted to make a theme bike to top them all, he found only one shop that was up to the task of pushing the limits of machine, style and taste.

No other custom builds have received more reactions than those featured by Dennis "D-Man" Vazquez of Pit Stop Motorsports. Nothing provokes screams of love or hate like one of his three-dimensional monsters. The letters and e-mails pour in with an almost dead-even split of passionate perceptions. One thing's for certain - there's no denying D-Man's bikes demand attention.

"I barely got out of the parking... 

   

 

"I barely got out of the parking lot before the police got me. I got two tickets for holding up traffic before making it a single mile!"

So what would make someone want to own a rolling 3-D movie-themed motorcycle? For McCullough, it was the need to exceed the sea of flat surfaces. "I saw D-Man's King Kong bike at Myrtle Beach. The owner could barely get up and down the street from all the people crowding it. I wanted to have something like that to stick out."

While a lot of shops might claim they can create this wild of a ride, McCullough discovered there was actually only one man capable. "There was a poster at the local Kawasaki shop of a custom ZX-14. I called the shop, but could never get him to give me a price. I later found out he was going through D-Man to get the work done.

At first I didn't want to go to New Jersey to get a bike built, but that was the best thing that ever happened. Don't get me wrong, I'm all man, but when me and him talked it was like love at first sight. Everything he was saying was right."

Now that McCullough had the right man for the job, he put his faith and credit score on the line and hoped the final product would be everything he wanted.

A few months later the build was finished and it was time for delivery in Myrtle Beach. Up to this point McCullough knew very little of the details, only that he left his credit card running with D-Man's imagination. Though the finished product surpassed all of his expectations, McCullough wondered if it would actually be rideable. "To be honest with you, I didn't think it would run. I took the bike off the trailer and pushed it around. It sat for about four hours in front of the hotel until D-Man called me up and asked if we were ready to ride. I barely got out of the parking lot before the police got me though. I got two tickets for holding up traffic before making it a single mile!"

So with a fully functional bike, a couple traffic tickets and a mob of people behind him, McCullough took on the rest of the country. The response has been mostly positive amongst bikers and onlookers. "The public can't believe what they are seeing. I haven't had any haters yet either."

All New 2011 Suzuki GSX-R600 and GSX-R750 Unveiled, Official Photos and Info

Suzuki is pulling out all the stops in 2011 with the release of an all new GSX-R600 and 750. Despite fresh bodywork that loosely resembles the older model, Suzuki officials report the bike is all new from the ground up. If that’s not riveting enough, Suzuki claims it hasn’t released a new model with this many improvements since the jump to the SRAD models in 1996. Those are bold words indeed, considering the SRAD era rewrote sportbike history.

Suzuki set its sights on improving three key elements; track performance, styling and weight reduction. Official numbers will be released later today, but unofficially the new GSX-R600 is 20 Lbs. lighter than its predecessor with the 750 losing about 19 Lbs. What does that mean for wet weight, how about 410- and 416-Lbs. for the 600 and 750.

No detail was overlooked either, as Suzuki went through a painstaking process of trimming the excess fat. Team Blue and White managed to cut over 2 Lbs. with the new frame and amazingly shed another 7 Lbs. with the fresh bodywork. In addition to thinner body panels, Suzuki simplified the number of fairing pieces from 40 to 32 and even saved another 1 Lb. with the new headlight.

The engine also went on a serious diet, as it’s now over 4 Lbs. lighter than the previous mill. Piston skirts and pin bosses on the 600 were carved to the tune of a 14% weight loss and the connecting rods were also lightened by 12%. If you think that’s insane, Suzuki also moved the ECM and all of its components from the tailsection to underneath the tank, since less wires means a 330 gram weight savings…yeah, Suzuki was that serious about making weight.

Along with an overall decrease in total engine heft, the motor is also more powerful. This bump in steam comes courtesy of lighter internal components, increased compression and a massaging of the piston surfaces for a robust midrange and top-end hit. To maximize the lightweight motor, Suzuki also reworked the transmission with a taller first gear and a tighter stack thereafter¬—a combo that is said to be “telepathic” on the track where you’ll never get caught between gears.

Along with the lightweight frame and feathery motor, Suzuki also shortened the wheelbase by 15mm, while leaving the new swingarm the same length as the previous unit. By rotating the engine 3-degrees inside the frame, Suzuki was able to tighten the package for improved turn-in feel, while retaining the longer swingarm length to keep on-throttle exits in check.

Other noteworthy upgrades include new Brembo 4-pot radial-mounted front brake calipers and the Nissin single unit from the GSX-R1000 out back. Showa 43mm Big Piston Forks (BPF) first seen on the ZX-6R are now standard on both Gixxer models. Technoweenies will also rejoice because the S-DMS selectable fueling maps from the GSX-R1000 have found their way onto the new smaller brothers, except you’ll only get two maps this go-around.

Along with the new bodywork that’s best described as stunning, the ergonomics have also been tweaked with a shorter, more sloped gas tank that allows taller riders to better tuck behind the screen. Front and rear overhang have also been decreased for less weight, creating a stance that's off the charts.

While horsepower figures and official weights aren’t available yet, the MSRP (suggested retail) for the two Gixxers was…which might be the biggest news yet. The GSX-R600 has a retail of $11,599 and the GSX-R750 rings in at $11,999. Yeah, you read that right, the 750 is only $400 more than the 600. How’s that for a bargain?

Suzuki Hayabusa - Skin Deep

Much like tattoos, the custom Hayabusa has been both admired and feared. In years past, mainstream sportbike riders considered fitting an oversized rear tire nothing short of blasphemy. Over time it slowly grew more popular and eventually gained social acceptance. And we'll be damned if fat tired customs aren't as commonplace as a celebrity with some skin art.

One man who was influential in the Hayabusa's aftermarket development is Ricky Monjaraz, a SoCal dude who's deep in the scene. He's been making aftermarket parts since he was kid, and when his dad created RIS Designs in the early 1990s it solidified Ricky's calling.

After years of carving out his spot it was no coincidence that the Ed Hardy crew looked to him for help when building a promotional bike.

"I chose a haybusa but decided... 

   

"Ed Hardy Motorsports asked if we could build a bike to showcase some new parts, so I chose a Hayabusa but decided to give it an all-new look."

When it came time to lay color over the highly customized Canni Design bodywork, RIS enlisted the help of the airbrush kings at H2O Cycles. H2O's owner, Louis Grasse, explained: "I wanted the opportunity to show off some of our freehand work. We used a sticker only as an outside guide for the design but the rest was freehand airbrush. It turned out to be a total of 65 hours of airbrushing."

Originally, RIS said that we would have about two weeks to finish the job before an upcoming show. We actually had about seven days!"

The combination of the new custom skins with updated ink not only made the bike socially elegant, but also gave a rebirth to an aging design. Now the 'Busa looks as much at home in the window of a trendy boutique as it would in front of a dingy tattoo parlor on the wrong side of the tracks.

As with all things non-traditional, some sportbike purists will probably shun the new finish, but in the end it's a motorcycle like this that will bring custom sportbikes to a higher level of public awareness.
